In a response to a joint letter co-signed by the Stove Industry Association (SIA), of which Stove Yard Cheshire are founding members, and the British Flue and Chimney Manufacturers Association (BFCMA), the Government confirmed that wood burning stoves would be permitted as a secondary heating source in new homes. If you remember, the Scottish Government tried to ban stoves in new builds but had to climb down after a massive public outcry. It's good to know that Westminster have also listened and seen sense.
The Government is currently working towards setting a new standard called the Future Homes Standard which will ensure that new homes are 'zero carbon ready'. Which means that they should not need any kind of retrofitting to become zero carbon in use. They acknowledged that it is possible to significantly reduce the level of smoke emitted through domestic burning if the right fuels, appliances and operating practices are used. As a sustainable heating solution modern Ecodesign wood burning stoves offer significant benefits including helping to reduce carbon emissions and improving air quality, alleviating energy system strain and providing energy independence for the homeowner.
At Stove Yard Cheshire we're delighted to know that stoves are officially here to stay and that the much-loved wood burner can carry on being the focal point in the homes of the future. Wood burning stoves play a crucial role in achieving cleaner air, supporting local economies and providing people with sustainable and flexible heating choices – and guess what? They're much better looking than heat pumps.
