Expert guidance from Stove Yard Cheshire
Choosing the right stove isn’t just about looks or a quoted kW figure. Our team at Stove Yard Cheshire specify, install, and maintain stoves across Cheshire every week. We’ll help you match the right appliance to your room size, chimney or flue set-up, building regulations, and how you actually live—so it heats beautifully, burns cleanly, and remains easy to use for years.
Why visit our Holmes Chapel showroom or book a consultation?
Seeing stoves in person matters. Flame picture, control feel, door action, noise levels, footprint and clearances are hard to judge online. In the Stove Yard Cheshire, Holmes Chapel Showroom you can compare models side-by-side and get immediate, practical advice from specialists who install these appliances every day.
A short consultation lets us size the heat output accurately, check hearth and alcove dimensions, discuss chimney or flue options (liners, twin-wall, external air), ventilation requirements, and any design constraints (mantels, TVs above, corner placement). If helpful, we’ll arrange a home survey to confirm specifics and provide a detailed, fixed quotation.
From first chat to HETAS-registered installation and aftercare, we handle everything—so you end up with the right stove, fitted correctly, with support you can rely on across Cheshire.
Fuel types: wood vs multi-fuel
Wood-burning models are optimised for seasoned logs and deliver the classic, efficient flame picture. Use “Ready to Burn” logs (≤20% moisture) for the cleanest results.
Multi-fuel appliances are designed to also burn authorised smokeless mineral fuels. They typically feature a grate and riddling system (air from below) for smokeless fuel, while wood burns best on a bed of ash with air introduced over the fire. If you see “convertible” or “Duo”, it usually means you can switch between wood and approved smokeless fuels.
Best-practice burning
For efficient, low-smoke fires: burn properly seasoned logs, keep a lively flame (avoid prolonged slumbering), and have your chimney swept regularly. Correct fuel, correct air settings and routine maintenance protect both performance and warranty.
clearSkies Certification
clearSkies is the UK’s independent mark showing a stove meets—or exceeds—Ecodesign 2022 standards for efficiency and low emissions. Levels run from 2 to 5, with Level 5 representing the highest performance within the scheme. Choosing a clearSkies-rated model future-proofs your purchase and supports cleaner air.
DEFRA Exempt / Smoke Control Approved
If a stove is DEFRA Exempt (also described as Smoke Control Approved), you can legally burn dry wood in UK Smoke Control Areas when the appliance is used correctly. Where a model isn’t exempt, you must use authorised smokeless fuels within those zones. We’ll advise on the right fuels, controls and set-up for your address.
Ecodesign (in force since 2022)
Ecodesign sets strict limits for particulates (PM), NOx, OGC and CO, and requires a minimum seasonal efficiency. All new models placed on the market must comply. clearSkies certification confirms that compliance—and many stoves significantly outperform the baseline.
